Albon says Williams were consistent in execution to secure P7

Alexander Albon says Williams were good in execution in F1 2023 to secure seventh in standings despite not updating as much.

It came down to the last race for Williams to secure seventh in the F1 standings after AlphaTauri’s improvements brought them close to the Grove-based outfit by three points. The team didn’t even bring any updates to focus on 2024 season.

Albon is proud of what Williams managed to retain seventh despite the focus shift. He knew the car wasn’t too great in all of the races but they still manage to score well by keeping bunch of cars behind as they were talked about in all of the 2023 season to hold up.

“I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved at the team,” said Albon. “I think about the races that we’ve scored points in, and we haven’t had really a smooth race where we’ve just gone: that was nice. I wish we had more of them. Unfortunately, a lot of them are holding up a bunch of cars behind us, which is what we’ve become renowned for.

“The car has improved a lot from last year. We’re going into every weekend feeling like there’s a chance to score points. But, even in that case, our race pace is not always that great. And yet we still come away with good points. I have to say that in reflecting I have had a lot of fun moments this year, I think it also just speaks to the fact…that I think Melbourne was the only race where I felt like I missed an opportunity to score points.

“But every other race we’ve done this year, when there’s been a chance, we’ve done it and I think that’s been the main difference against our rivals,” summed up Albon, who hails the execution part from Williams. Even though the car was termed inconsistent, the Thai states their execution has been the difference.

“It’s strange, because a lot of people think we’re very inconsistent, but I personally think the execution of each weekend has been very consistent,” said Albon. “The car itself is quite inconsistent. So we know, Monza, Vegas tracks go well, for us. We know cold tracks do well for us.

“We know what tracks don’t work for us, we windy tracks don’t work for us, tight tracks don’t work for us. Our car does have its moments and one of our biggest focuses next year is to stop these weaknesses in our car. But the execution has been very strong, I think, and we made the most of opportunities.

“So that’s why I believe we’ve been able to actually get P7, I think. When we’ve had the car to do it, we’ve made sure we’ve scored the points. I think others have either had a blunder with strategy or whatever it may have been, just to miss out on points,” summed up Albon.
