Ai Ogura has taken a clear stance as a title contender in MotoGP after positioning himself second in the points standings, thanks to his second place at the German Grand Prix.
In his second season as a MotoGP rider, the Japanese has demonstrated his maturity. His performance at Sachsenring marks the fifth consecutive time he has finished in the top four, a streak he began at the Italian Grand Prix in May, culminating in a notable victory in Assen.
Thanks to the result obtained in Saxony, Ogura has moved from fourth to second place in the overall standings, now just 14 points behind the official Aprilia team rider, Jorge Martín. This evolution is good news for the 2024 Moto2 world champion, as Martín’s current performance is below his.
After the race, Ogura confidently stated that he feels like a real candidate for the championship: ‘Yes, of course. We are in a good position in the championship, and in the last three races, we have been very competitive. Our goal now is to keep working this way.’
Additionally, Ogura rated his first half of the season with palpable enthusiasm, giving it a score of 10 out of 10: ‘I didn’t expect to be this strong this year.’
Despite his successes, Ogura is aware that the second part of the season can be challenging. ‘Conditions change, and riders who are fast on a certain circuit do as well; managing the entire situation is complicated. We need to stay consistent and see where we can end up.’
Looking towards the summer break, Ogura hopes for a rest that allows him to recharge, with simple plans to practice fishing and motorcycling. ‘The goal is to come back with a clear mind,’ he concluded.
