David Schumacher will compete in the Euroformula Open for the rest of the 2018 season with RP Motorsport, it has been announced.

The son of former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher and cousin of Mick, will make his Formula 3 debut in the EF Open series at Jerez next month and see-through the 2018 season at Barcelona with the championship leading RP Motorsport outfit.

“It’s such a pleasure to make my debut in the Euroformula Open with RP Motorsport, which is a prestigious team in the series as they won six titles over the last seven years,” said the German. “I think it’s the right choice to know how the series works.

“The Euroformula is extremely competitive. Of course, it will be my first outing driving a Formula 3 car, so I need to pay attention to every detail. I would like to thank RP Motorsport to give this incredible chance and I’m looking forward to start driving the car.”

Team manager, Niki Rocca added: “We are delighted to have David with us for the remainder of the season. He is a talented driver as his results in the German and Saudi Formula 4 series.

“We are sure his first outing in the EF Open will be a great step forward in his racing career.” The 16-year-old made his single-seater debut in 2017/18 with US Racing – a team co-owned by Ralf and Gerhard Ungar.

He raced in the UAE F4 series where he finished second with 325 points despite missing the first round, scoring 16 podiums including three wins. More recently, he was crowned the ADAC F4 rookie champion of 2018 with 332 points and was ninth in the main standings.

He joins the already crowned 2018 EF Open champion Felipe Drugovich in the Italian outfit. The Brazilian, who also won the 2017/18 winter MRF Challenge series, has been dominant all-through with 10 wins in 12 races so far.

The younger Schumacher thus joins his elder cousin in F3 as Mick competes in the more senior FIA European Formula 3 Championship, where he is leading the 2018 standings by 49 points with one round remaining.
