The final day of the FIA Formula 2 (F2) Championship had Carlin’s Nikita Mazepin finish on top from UNI-Virtuosi Racing’s Callum Ilott.
After the two-day domination by Sauber Junior Team by Charouz Racing’s Louis Deletraz, the final day of F2 testing in Abu Dhabi at Yas Marina circuit, it was the Carlin’s Mazepin leading UNI-Virtosui Racing’s Ilott with a time of 1m50.473s to round out F2 run for 2019.
The morning session saw Carlin dominate with a one-two in the early half, before positions shifted and Mazepin stayed atop the time sheets, while his teammate was pipped by Ilott, who set a time 0.029s off the 20-year-old. The morning times remained for majority.
Eventually Yuki Tsunoda fell down to seventh as between him and the top two of Mazepin and Ilott in the morning, Charouz’s Deletraz was third with MP Motorsport’s Ralph Boschung fourth, DAMS’ Dan Ticktum fifth and Prema’s Robert Shwartzman sixth.
Times were slower in the afternoon, with Prema’s Mick Schumacher ending up on top but was 10th still courtesy his time in the morning session as UNI-Virtuosi Racing’s Guanyu Zhou and Charouz’s Pedro Piquet slotted in between.
The lone red flag of the day was caused by HWA Racelab’s Giuliano Alesi, when he stopped on track. The F2 running for 2019 came to a close but the series is to test the 18-inch tyres on Sunday and Monday ahead of its official launch in 2020.
