A rebirth of A1GP championship is on the move as finances is being sorted for ‘World Cup of Motorsport’.
Nearly two decades after A1GP folded due to financial crunch, a pool of former executives have come together to raise $100m in order to finance the rebirth of the ‘World Cup of Motorsport’ championship in the near future.
As per a report from Sky News, people are looking to bring back A1GP series, which was last staged in 2008/09 before folding up. If the finances is sorted, there will be about 20 teams representing their countries driving a single specification of car.
One of the key figures involved in Sir Keith Mills, who is a former director of world motorsport’s governing body with the project being spearheaded by Marcin Budkowski. Having worked with the FIA, he moved to work with Renault/Apline.
But post the departure of Cyril Abiteboul and a revamp at Alpine, Budkowski left the F1 team and is now working to revive the A1GP series. Another from F1 is Mike Gascoyne, who is enlisted as an adviser with David White too on the list.
Origin Sports Group is also involved in the project as the series could feature teams from China, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the USA and UK. A prototype car is believed to be already built with races likely to be held in off-F1 season to utilise the winter months.
At the moment, 12 races are being planned across Europe, North America, Latin America, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific for the months between December and July. The line-up is to feature one experienced personnel and one youngster.
