MotoGP riders have begun to share their first impressions of the new 850cc bikes, which promise a lighter and less physically demanding riding experience than the current 1000cc prototypes. This change occurs within the framework of a significant regulatory shift that will come into effect in 2027.
With the development of the new bikes at an advanced stage, riders have been able to provide a more precise assessment of the characteristics of these machines. The intention behind this regulatory change is to reduce speeds and make the competition more sustainable, while the 850cc bikes present a totally different dynamic from what riders are used to.
Smaller displacement engines, a new chassis, less dependence on aerodynamics, and a switch to Pirelli tires are some of the changes marking the new era of MotoGP. For KTM rider Pol Espargaro, the 2027 bikes represent a significant advance, as the current bikes are too physically demanding. ‘I would like to choose the 850cc bikes. The 1000cc is very physical and, moreover, I think it’s more dangerous due to its power,’ Espargaro stated.
On the other hand, rider Takaaki Nakagami, who has transitioned from the LCR Honda team to test rider, believes that the switch from Michelin to Pirelli will be the most notable change for 2027. When asked about the fun of riding the new bikes, Nakagami commented that personally, he finds them more enjoyable than the 1000cc bikes.
Luca Marini, a Honda rider, has stated that the new bikes resemble the current Moto2 bikes more than those that have been in competition. This similarity could benefit riders like Izan Guevara and Daniel Holgado, who are moving directly from Moto2 to the higher championship. ‘I think Moto2 riders will have a great advantage with this transition. I expect a whole new landscape for them,’ Marini declared.
Finally, former Tech3 rider Maverick Vinales, after testing the 850cc bike, expressed that the new generation of bikes is much easier to ride and physically less demanding. ‘The feel with the bike is exceptional. It’s like a Moto2 with a good engine. It was really nice,’ Vinales concluded.
