Lewis Hamilton got his 66th pole position at the Baku Street Circuit. Valtteri Bottas was 2nd and Kimi Räikkönen completed the top 3.

Palmer couldn’t take part in qualifying due to the damage his Renault engine suffered after a failure in FP3. Q1 didn’t provide any surprises, with Vandoorne, Ericsson, Grosjean and Alonso eliminated. Both McLaren will start at the back of the grid because of accumulation of power unit penalties.

Wehrlein managed to make it into Q2, but couldn’t do better than last place behind Hülkenberg, Magnussen, Sainz and Kvyat. The Spaniard will start the race on P15 due to the 3-place penalty she carries from his accident at the start of the Canadian GP.

Q3 was looking good for Bottas after Hamilton made a mistake in the last sector and he was in provisional pole when the session was red flagged. Ricciardo crashed and left his Red Bull in the middle of the track, leaving not much more than 3 minutes left of the session. The drivers had one last attempt and lots of difficulties to warm up the tyres, but Hamilton was able to set a fantastic time which brought him to the top of the timesheets. Räikkönen was 3rd ahead of Vettel, Verstappen, Pérez, Ocon, Stroll, Massa and Ricciardo.
