The box passing penalty of Arvid Lindblad during the Dutch GP has been described as «excessive» by F1 TV commentator Alex Brundle. This decision has sparked controversy, especially at a time when drivers should not be penalized for defensive maneuvers.
During the first lap of the race at Zandvoort, an accident involving local driver Max Verstappen caused great confusion. Lindblad, one of the drivers competing behind the four-time world champion, was forced to take evasive action, during which he overtook Pierre Gasly, driver of Alpine, while entering turn 1.
The officials deemed this action to be a yellow flag infringement, issuing a harsh penalty for the rookie from Racing Bulls.
On the post-race program of _F1 TV_, Brundle expressed his solidarity with Lindblad’s situation, stating that it is unfair to penalize a driver for a maneuver aimed at avoiding an accident. «The accepted rule is that if you are trying to avoid a collision, you shouldn’t have to consider other aspects during that maneuver,» Brundle commented.
Lindblad, 19, also shared his impressions about the incident. «Max lost control and there was debris everywhere. I didn’t see any yellow flag, so it seemed unfair to penalize me for trying to avoid an accident,» he explained after the race. The driver expressed that the penalty severely affected his competitiveness chances.
