Just a few hours after having been forced into retirement in the 26th race of the 2013 FIA Formula 3 European Championship season, Ferrari’s up-and-coming young-gun Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam) was beaming again: at Vallelunga’s Autodromo Piero Taruffi, the Italian secured a clear win, with Luis Felipe Derani (Fortec Motorsports) and Alexander Sims (ThreeBond with T-Sport) finishing second and third respectively. Marciello extended his championship lead to 45.5 points. Nonetheless, the fight for the title will be taken down to the season final, held next weekend at the Hockenheimring.

Particularly the opening stages of the third race of the weekend proved to be eventful: Roman Eddie Cheever (Prema Powerteam) didn’t get going at the start and Nicholas Latifi (Carlin) couldn’t avoid hitting him. Later on lap one, Sean Gelael (Double R Racing) was pushed by an opponent into the side of Lucas Wolf’s (URD Rennsport) single-seater. Both drivers went off onto the grass and had to retire. The incident caused a yellow-flag period.

At the re-start on lap four, Raffaele Marciello defended his lead, with Luis Felipe Derani, Félix Serrallés (Fortec Motorsports), Alexander Sims and Alex Lynn (Prema Powerteam) holding the following positions. Serallés spun due to a hard fight with Lynn, resulting in his early retirement.

Raffaele Marciello (Prema Powerteam)
“Winning the race was important, and this win this allowed me to re-extend my championship lead. Battle for championship it’s not ended, I’m aware that there still is a long way to go to the title. I learned at Zandvoort that even a big lead doesn’t mean you’re safe. Now I will focus on the season finale at Hockenheim. I will give my very best, there.”
