In the morning at the Spa was raining, and in qualifying in the wet conditions Luca Ghiotto showed himself perfect, unexpectedly winning the pole. The nearest of the pursuers, Emil Bernstorff was second with 0.333 seconds behind.

Championship leader Alex Lynn showed only fifth time behind his main rival Richie Stanaway. Third time showed another contender for the title of Jimmy Eriksson.

ART GP went for a bold slick-tyre gamble during the session that backfired on it, with Marvin Kirchhofer the best placed of its cars in seventh, behind Patrick Kujala.

Patric Niederhauser made a late improvement to take eighth ahead of Matheo Tuscher, with Zamparelli completing the top ten.

Another of Trident’s newcomers Konstantin Tereschenko has been ruled out of the weekend as a precaution following his aerial crash in practice, while Carmen Jorda failed to set a time after sliding off into the gravel at Paul Frere corner on her out lap at the start of the session.
