Joel Eriksson has won the second race at the Red Bull Ring after many rounds without a victory. Norris has been close to the Swedish driver, but he’s had to conform with second place and could claim the title in Race 3. Mazepin completes the podium.
Race started and Devlin DeFrancesco‘s car stalled on the grid. On front, Joel Eriksson mantained his first place despite Lando Norris giving all he had to take his lead. Behind them were Nikita Mazepin and Callum Ilott.
Both of the drivers on the lead didn’t take too much time to open a big gap to the rest of the field, with Norris always close to Eriksson, but not enough to try the overtake.
With 15 minutes to go, Pedro Piquet, who was fighting for positions in the middle of the pack, spun and went on to the grass in turn 1.
Second qualified on the championship, Maximilian Günther, was having a bad race. He started ninth, and was still there with 11 minutes to go. He couldn’t pass Ferdinand Habsburg and even had to defend from Joey Mawson in the last laps.
Last lap arrived and Eriksson had already more than one second on Norris. That was enough for Eriksson to take his fifth win of the season and the first one since Hungaroring. Norris has finished in second place and could claim the title in Race 3. Mazepin gets his second podium of the year after finishing third. Ilott, Jehan Daruvala, Ralf Aron, Jake Hughes, Günther, Mawson and Habsburg have scored points.
These results leave, with four races to go, Norris on the lead of the championship with 418 points, followed by Günther with 327. This means that Norris could win the championship this afternoon, on the last race of the weekend today at 16:55 local time.
