Bubba Wallace, driver of the number 23 car from 23XI Racing, has expressed his acceptance of the sanction imposed by NASCAR during the final lap of the Cup Series race held on Sunday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. With this decision, Wallace is preparing to face the rest of the regular season.
At a press conference last Saturday in North Wilkesboro, Wallace reflected on the sanction, stating: “In the end, there’s no choice but to accept it, right?” The penalty caused Wallace to lose his original second place position after race control determined that he traveled below the outside line to improve his position during the last moment.
Despite accepting the sanction, Wallace expressed his frustration. “I thought the situation was handled unfairly, as I believe I tried to regain the position,” he said. He currently occupies thirteenth place in the standings, with 55 points above the cut line, when he could have been 83 points ahead if he hadn’t received the sanction.
After the race, Wallace and his crew chief, Charles Denike, attempted to argue against the penalty at the NASCAR hauler, but their defense was unsuccessful. “The damage was already done, and that’s that,” Wallace added. When asked if he agreed with the spirit of the rule, he confessed: “I don’t know… I’ve never been in a situation like that; I’ve been close to cases, but in the end, I put everyone in a tough position.”
He also commented on his interaction with Ty Gibbs at the finish line, which influenced the final outcome. “If he hadn’t pressured me at the line, I would have finished third and probably wouldn’t have received any penalty.”
