James Vowles, team principal of Williams, has stated that the delays in production experienced during the winter and the initial stages of the 2026 Formula 1 season could end up being “one of the best things” for the Grove team.
During a public address at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, in the podcast Up To Speed, Vowles addressed the difficulties of transforming the British team, currently in eighth position in the constructors’ championship after the first nine races. He explained that the interruptions in their work during the winter have affected their initial momentum in the season.
“I don’t think people are being too harsh. People want Williams, like me, to be back at the top. We must remember that we are independent. We do it for our passion and to enjoy racing,” Vowles said.
The team principal acknowledged Williams’ rich heritage but emphasized that they cannot rest on past successes. “For about 20 years there should have been more investment,” he added, stressing the importance of ensuring the team is ready to win races and championships in the future.
Vowles highlighted that losses in production time, although they may not seem significant, have had a considerable impact. “We have lost about two weeks. And when you lose two weeks, you begin to fall behind in a surprising way,” he indicated.
However, Vowles chose to view the delay as an opportunity. “Now that it’s been resolved, I think it’s one of the best things that could have happened to us. Often, it’s darkest before the dawn, and these are moments that have allowed us to make changes we might not have made otherwise,” he explained, adding that they are bringing in new people and systems to the team.
The Williams team, in such a competitive environment as Formula 1, is currently facing the challenge of balancing structural improvement with the need to compete at the highest level. Vowles has expressed cautious optimism for the future, trusting that with the implemented changes, results on the track can be improved.
