The debate over the possible union between Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli under the Mercedes banner has sparked controversial opinions. Former Formula 1 driver, Jolyon Palmer, has expressed his concern, considering that this association could be a ‘recipe for disaster’.
Verstappen, currently at Red Bull Racing, has been the subject of rumors linking him to Mercedes and McLaren. Palmer highlighted that the increasingly prominent Antonelli, who is in his second season and leads the championship with a 25-point advantage over his teammate, George Russell, has emerged as a leader within the team.
Palmer, speaking on the platform F1 Nation, considered that if Russell decided to leave, this new context could complicate the team’s dynamics. ‘The only question is whether Wolff would want to pair Antonelli, a great talent, with Verstappen,’ said Palmer.
Furthermore, he added that Kimi Antonelli’s competitive personality would not make him a good number two. ‘If George leaves, Max would not be the ideal substitute,’ he concluded.
Meanwhile, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed his desire to maintain the current driver lineup for the 2027 season, stating that the team is satisfied with its current formation.
The next race of the season will be the Belgian Grand Prix from July 17 to 19 at Spa-Francorchamps.
