The recent events in the Formula 1 season have revealed a real opportunity for Ferrari due to the reliability issues facing Mercedes. This opinion is supported by retired driver Anthony Davidson, who emphasizes that the strong performance of the Maranello vehicles could allow them to compete for the crown.

After the ninth race of the 2026 season, held at the British Grand Prix, where Charles Leclerc achieved victory, Davidson has analyzed the situation. Leclerc was joined on the podium by George Russell from Mercedes, who finished second, and his teammate Lewis Hamilton, in third.

The championship leader, Kimi Antonelli, also from Mercedes, faced a difficult race. He encountered difficulties due to a problem with a wheel shield, which caused them to finish in 15th position after a penalty for track limits.

This situation has allowed Russell to close in on Antonelli to just 25 points in the standings. Hamilton and Leclerc occupy third and fourth positions, respectively, with differences of seven and 46 points from the leader.

Davidson has explained that the current reliability difficulties of Mercedes have generated concern within the team. According to him, Ferrari should be optimistic; although they do not have the fastest car, they could rely on their consistency for the final stretch of the season.

Even though Mercedes has won seven of the nine Grands Prix contested, both drivers have suffered retirements: Russell had to cease competing in the Canadian Grand Prix due to a battery issue, while Antonelli retired in Barcelona due to an electrical failure.

In the constructors’ championship standings, Mercedes leads with 333 points, followed by Ferrari with 255 points and McLaren in third place with 179 points.
