Juan Pablo Montoya, former Formula 1 driver, has highlighted that Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the championship and George Russell’s teammate at Mercedes, needs a victory at the British GP to reaffirm his authority in the competition.
Russell arrives at Silverstone after securing his second win of the season in Austria, where he converted his pole into a victory. With the aim of repeating his success in front of his home crowd, Montoya believes this race could be decisive for Antonelli.
In a recent appearance on F1 TV, Montoya commented that Antonelli’s victory would be a powerful message in the title fight. “If we hadn’t had a yellow flag situation in Austria, Russell would have kept the pole and might have overtaken Kimi,” he stated.
Montoya noted that Antonelli seems to have a better fit with the Mercedes car than Russell in practice. “Kimi is always present in practice, while George tries to copy his style. In Austria, I thought Antonelli could start from behind and overtake him, but in the end Russell knew how to manage the race,” he added.
With these expectations, the pressure on Antonelli at Silverstone is evident. Thus, the race this weekend could determine who prevails in this intense battle within the Mercedes team.
