Guenther Steiner, team principal of Haas, has expressed his frustration towards the commissioners of the Miami Grand Prix, stating that there should be a time limit for post-race penalties. His criticism arises after a significant delay in communication regarding penalties following the competition.
Several incidents were subjected to investigation by the commissioners, including cases involving prominent drivers such as Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Charles Leclerc. The penalties were long awaited, and the final decision did not arrive until two and a half hours after the checkered flag, leaving the teams in a state of uncertainty.
Steiner recounted that he was on the plane back home when he learned that the penalties were still under deliberation. “If you don’t have a clear understanding of what happened during the race, perhaps you shouldn’t issue a penalty,” he added, emphasizing the need for a quicker decision-making process.
According to him, the rules regarding driver traffic should be clearly defined, and camera footage should be sufficient to determine sanction mechanisms without requiring lengthy deliberation. “What matters is whether a driver crossed a white line or not. The footage won’t change over time,” Steiner concluded, advocating for a faster and more efficient approach in the commissioners’ decisions.
