Porsche is facing significant challenges with its 963 model in the IMSA championship. The weight penalty now imposes a load of 1,084 kg on the vehicle, which remains the heaviest among GTP cars. This situation becomes especially evident ahead of the race at Laguna Seca, where the vehicle’s limitations are expected to be more visible compared to the previous race in Long Beach.
After achieving a third and fourth place in Long Beach, where factors like luck played an important role, the Porsche Penske Motorsport team is now looking to optimize the car’s performance on a circuit that presents very different characteristics. Driver Felipe Nasr has commented that the heavy load of the car makes maneuvering during braking and corners particularly complicated.
Driver Kevin Estre has acknowledged that it is difficult to compare the car’s response, as the Laguna Seca track requires a driving style that contrasts significantly with that of other circuits. “We do not have direct data for making effective comparisons with other tracks like Sebring, where the weight was lighter,” he indicated.
With the 963 model already updated with the Evo package, the team faces a development challenge under high weight conditions. Despite achieving good results in Long Beach, where the circuit design helped to mask the weight deficiencies, the dynamics at Laguna Seca are expected to be harsher, as it offers more overtaking opportunities and requires constant speed.
Nasr has confirmed that the Laguna Seca circuit will allow for greater flow during the races, which will open more strategic options. However, Estre admitted that the weight penalty is much more noticeable on traditional circuits, and additional effort will be needed to minimize tire usage to ensure good performance throughout the race.
