Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen has expressed a favorable opinion towards the new Gen4 car of Formula E, following a conversation with the driver of this championship, Antonio Félix da Costa, who revealed that Verstappen “likes” the design of the new machinery.
Historically, Verstappen has maintained a reluctant stance towards electric competitions, considering that the 2026 regulation in F1 has turned the competition into “a Formula E with steroids”. However, the changes being introduced with the new car could result in a significant shift for the series.
Significant improvements in the Gen4
The new Gen4 car stands out with a power of 800 horsepower, an all-wheel-drive system, and an active differential. Experts foresee that these changes could reduce lap times by up to ten seconds, positioning Formula E as the second fastest category, just behind Formula 1.
After the official launch of the Gen4 at Paul Ricard, Verstappen shared his impression with da Costa, who told Motorsport.com that the Red Bull driver was more satisfied with the new model compared to the previous Gen3. “He was very critical of the Gen3, but happy with the Gen4,” da Costa assured.
Future expectations
The Gen4 will be introduced during the 2026/27 season, which will start in December and is expected to include up to 19 races. Manufacturers have already begun to build and test their Gen4 engines, with some drivers having the opportunity to test them in Europe.
Da Costa, who won the Formula E title in 2019/20 with DS Penske, has described the Gen4 as a “giant leap”. According to him, the improvements in power, grip, and technology represent a considerable challenge for both drivers and teams.
