Mick Schumacher, a newcomer to IndyCar, has successfully completed his first laps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval on a test day ahead of the 110th edition of the Indianapolis 500, scheduled for May 24. On the first of two official test days, Schumacher faced his obligation to complete the Rookie Orientation Program (ROP), which he easily passed on his first attempt.
After familiarizing himself with the 2.5-mile circuit without the competition traffic, the German took part in an open session for all IndyCar drivers, where he had the opportunity to drive in a group and experience the oval under competitive conditions. “Overall, the day was interesting. I was able to get used to the track and the feelings you have at the wheel,” Schumacher commented.
The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver observed that, compared to his performance in Phoenix, where he achieved a surprising fourth place in his first oval qualifying session, the Indianapolis oval demands a smoother driving style. “While in Phoenix I could push harder in the corners, here I had to be cleaner and smoother on the entries,” he added.
Schumacher displayed a confident and determined attitude throughout the day. “I didn’t make any special impression or surprise anyone; everything was within expectations,” he said regarding his performance. Furthermore, he mentioned that during his training, in one phase of the ROP, he felt a strange behavior behind the car, which prompted the team to act and resolve the issue immediately.
One of the key messages he has absorbed from his previous experience is the importance of trusting his feelings at the wheel. “I’ve always tried to listen to what the car tells me. That helps me react quickly when something doesn’t seem right,” Schumacher commented, who hopes to continue gaining experience and adapting to the high speeds of the Indianapolis oval.
With the aim of preparing for the upcoming sessions, the driver acknowledges that he still needs to experience qualifying conditions with an added power boost. “I haven’t driven under the added pressure of qualifying, so that will be a new challenge. However, I hope to keep learning and improving every day,” he concluded.
