RMC Motorsport has announced its plans to design a new vehicle to compete in the highest category of the World Rally Championship (WRC) starting in 2027. The Spanish team, with a recognized trajectory, will work on a car that meets the new technical regulations of WRC27, in collaboration with the Real Federación Española de Automovilismo (RFEDA).
The project presentation took place during the Rally Islas Canarias round. Founded in 2004 by Roberto Mendez, RMC Motorsport has accumulated nearly a decade of experience in developing vehicles in the N5 category, which have competed in national and international championships.
According to the new regulations, RMC Motorsport will need to build a minimum of 10 WRC27 vehicles and ensure their sale to other private teams. Mendez has expressed that “this project represents the professional culmination of RMC’s journey”, highlighting the experience accumulated in constructing N5 vehicles.
The collaboration with RFEDA is presented as a key pillar for the success of the project, with Manuel Avino at the helm. Mendez hopes to provide more technical information about the new vehicle soon, emphasizing the importance of this initiative for Spanish talent.
Avino commented that “we could not miss the opportunity to incorporate this type of team into the manufacture of Rally1 vehicles in 2027”. This partnership not only aims to boost the Spanish motorsport industry but also seeks to inspire emerging drivers.
Under the new technical regulations of the WRC, vehicles will have a maximum price of €345,000 and will feature a tubular safety cell, double wishbone suspension, and a 1.6-liter turbocharged internal combustion engine using sustainable fuels. RMC is the second independent team to join the initiative, after Project Rally One, while Toyota is the only manufacturer that has confirmed the development of a new vehicle under the WRC27 rules.
Malcolm Wilson, FIA’s sports vice president, stated that this project is a positive sign for the future of the WRC, highlighting that the FIA has worked to create a regulatory environment that allows independent projects to compete on equal terms with major manufacturers.
