The British driver Lewis Hamilton has appeared perplexed and amused after receiving an unexpected goodwill message from presenter Richard Hammond, known for his participation in the show Top Gear. The moment took place during an event with Shell, just before the weekend of the Chinese Grand Prix.

While on stage in front of a large audience, Hamilton watched the video in which Hammond wished him success for the upcoming race. The message, which seemed like a well-prepared promotional moment, surprised the current Ferrari driver.

The goodwill message

Hammond began his speech by highlighting the collaboration between Shell and Ferrari for over 75 years, mentioning how this synergy makes the driver’s cars even faster. “But I don’t want to focus solely on that,” he said, adding humorously that his intention was to send the best vibes to Hamilton for the upcoming competition.

The words of the former television presenter concluded with an enthusiastic wish for luck for the weekend in Shanghai, adding that “everyone will be watching you.”

Hamilton’s reaction

Despite the simplicity of the message, Hamilton couldn’t hide his confusion. “I have never met him before. It’s very strange. I didn’t expect to see this kind of messages,” he commented with laughter. He also expressed his admiration for Hammond’s work. “I grew up watching his show. It has been a nice gesture, I am grateful.”.

The driver has qualified in fourth position for the sprint race of the Chinese Grand Prix, which will take place on March 14 at 11 a.m. local time (03:00 GMT).
