Despite his public criticisms of the new Formula 1 rules for 2026, Max Verstappen continues to show a strong commitment to his team, Red Bull Racing. The team principal, Laurent Mekies, assures that the Dutch driver’s motivation to improve the car is the same as before.
Verstappen has become one of the most prominent critics of the new generation of F1 cars, which rely heavily on electricity and feature active aerodynamic components both at the front and at the rear. During pre-season testing, the driver compared these vehicles to “Formula E with steroids” and has reiterated this sentiment after the Australian Grand Prix, where he expressed a sense of “emptiness” regarding the performance of the cars.
Although his statements have generated debate about his future in the competition – since his contract with Red Bull expires in 2028 – Mekies defends that Verstappen’s dedication to the team has not changed. “I have no doubts about his motivation. His way of working with us and his commitment to improvements is the same as last season,” Mekies commented.
The new hybrid power unit of F1 has introduced an equal distribution of power generation between the internal combustion engine and electric components, which has changed the dynamics of competition. At Albert Park, where drivers often lose speed in long sections without pronounced braking zones, this change has been evident.
Mekies does not rule out that, over time and performance on different circuits, Verstappen may reconsider his opinion on the new F1 cars. Moreover, he points out that the team is open to hearing the driver’s ideas on typical improvements and works collaboratively with the FIA and F1 to ensure the success of the championship. “Max cares about the sport and brings us many ideas on how to improve,” Mekies concluded.
