Lewis Hamilton reckons F1 sport is heading in right direction under Liberty Media after old management didn’t do enough and were slow on several topics.
With the sport is placed in the current times, Ferrari’s Hamilton feels that F1 on the whole is going in the right direction in terms of how it is managed by Liberty Media and Sefano Domenicali, than how it was in the previous run under CVC Capitals and Bernie Ecclestone.
Hamilton is a lot about inclusivity and openness whether on social media or trying different things. Under Ecclestone, it was really not happening in larger terms. But Liberty Media has embraced social media as a weapon to grow the sport and earn revenues from that untouched area.
The sport is still not as open, it is still one of the rich man’s sport, but there is some growth, which is helping it to reach to masses. Hamilton talked at length about the types of circuits they are racing at and the safety measures. He likes the new circuits, but will always prefer the old ones.
He is fine with sprint, even if the racing aspects sometimes doesn’t works out on certain circuits. He would surely want to see the racing to be more exciting in times to come. “It’s a difficult one, because you can’t ever say that you go too far in safety,” said Hamilton to media.
“The tracks are different today than they were obviously back in the 90s and early 2000s, where the runoff areas were grass, and when you push beyond the limit, there was a price to pay in the sense that you end up in the gravel, or you damage the car. Today, you can run wide and come back on. That’s not something I love, but it is the way it is. There’s nothing I can say that’s going to change that.
“But it’s great having old circuits like this that have real character. I always describe it like an old house. Generally, the new circuits don’t have character, but Austin does, for example. That’s a great track to drive on a single lap, but it’s a great race circuit as well. But there are a lot of tracks, whilst we have maybe a fan base there, the track doesn’t give us a lot, you’re just following each other and qualifying is everything. We’ve already got the sprint races, which I think are a positive.
“I’ve generally enjoyed those weekends. But there’s probably some more we can work on in terms of making the races even more exciting. Some of those sprint races, Singapore next year, for example. 19 laps of Singapore, you won’t see any overtaking probably. But there are other tracks that could bode well for something like that. I think the sport is going in the right direction, you have seen the signing with Apple.
“It is just amazing to see the sport growing across the globe, and I’m so happy to see the sport really being taken in by new people, because at the beginning when I started in F1, it was the same group and it wasn’t growing just at the slow pace with the old management that weren’t forward-thinking, weren’t about inclusivity bringing people from all over, so I think we are going in the right direction,” summed up Hamilton.
