Fernando Alonso says even though Aston Martin scored a point in F1 US GP, they were slower than Visa Cash App RB, which finished behind them.
After the crash in sprint race, Aston Martin’s Alonso hoped for a better run in F1 US GP considering the pace shown to start the weekend. But it wasn’t to be. He not only lost to Nico Hulkenberg, but even lost out to Yuki Tsunoda to drop outside the points places after starting in 10th.
He had Visa Cash App RB’s Liam Lawson behind, who had Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll behind. The Spaniard mostly ran outside the points until the clash between Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Carlos Sainz, which helped it to gain couple of places to be 10th again and in points.
Despite the brief scare for Oliver Bearman, Alonso couldn’t gain on him as his race pace wasn’t good enough. Even though he finished ahead of Lawson, the Spaniard reckoned Visa Cash App RB was a faster car than Aston Martin. He put his car to be ninth fastest of the 10 teams.
“I tried to brake inside, I didn’t watch the replay,” said Alonso to media. “You need to be lucky, today we lost some places there. It was a hard one point, we didn’t have the pace to be honest. We were slow compared to the cars in front of us, and we were holding the Visa Cash App up behind us, and he was within one second for the whole race.
“So that means that they have more pace than us, and we struggled in the race more than in any other session over the weekend. We need to improve on that in the last five races. We were probably ninth [fastest] today, I don’t know who is the ninth team, maybes Alpine is the one that is struggling more.
“But after Alpine, I don’t know. Haas is clearly in front of us with Ollie very strong race, Sauber for sure is in front, Williams is in another league and then the top four, so there are not many teams behind us at the moment. To be 10th and to score one point is a good result, but we need to get better for Mexico.
“On paper, I think Mexico and Las Vegas are the worst of the remaining tracks, and Brazil and Qatar may be the best, so if we score a point or two in Mexico, that will be very welcome,” summed up Alonso.
