Max Verstappen, Marc Marquez and McLaren have been nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards for 2025.

Having won the 2022 World Sportsman of the Year, Red Bull’s Verstappen has been nominated once again in the category for 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards after winning the 2024 F1 drivers’ world championship – his fourth on the bounce.

The Dutchman only became the fourth driver to have the prestigious award in 2022 after Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Should he win this year, he will join Schumacher in becoming only the second F1 driver to have won more than once.

Verstappen has stiff competition from Leon Marchand (Swimming), Mondo Duplantis (Athletics), Carlos Alcaraz (Tennis) and Tadej Pogacar (Cycling). McLaren, meanwhile, has been nominated for the World Team of the Year award – its first nomination in Laureus.

After Red Bull ended Mercedes’ run, McLaren ended the Austrian outfit’s run by winning the 2024 F1 constructors’ championship. If they win the Laureus award, the Woking-based outfit will join the likes of Renault, Brawn GP and Mercedes in the process.

In terms of competition, McLaren is up against Spain Men’s Team, FC Barcelona Women’s Team & Real Madrid Men’s Team (Football) and USA Men’s National Team & Boston Celtics Team (Basketball). A third nomination from motor racing is Ducati’s Marquez from MotoGP.

He has been nominated under the World Comeback of the Year category after returning from injury with Gresini Ducati to finish third in the riders’ standings. This is his fifth nomination after 2014 (Breakthrough winner), 2015 (Sportsman), 2020 (Sportsman) and 2022 (Comeback).

Marquez faces competition from Rebeca Andrade (Gymnastics), Caeleb Dressel & Ariarne Titmus (Swimming), Lara Gut-Behrami (Alpine Skiing) and Rishabh Pant (Cricket). The award ceremony will take place on April 20-21 in Madrid.
