Rwanda has joined the list of pushing for a F1 grand prix in their region after its President relayed the call during the FIA General Assembly gathering.
Apart from the other regions around the globe wanting a F1 grand prix in their region, Africa has two venues eyeing a spot after Rwanda President Paul Kagame relayed the bid to host a race in future. He opened the FIA General Assembly that is being held in Kigali.
It also hosted the 2024 FIA Prize Ceremony to reward the champions of the season. It is reported that a circuit plan is already in motion with Alexander Wurz’s company handling the design department. Already, the promoters of Kyalami circuit are pushing for F1 to return to their base.
Their circuit is located in South Africa in Gauteng. With Rwanda eyeing for a F1 spot themselves, it makes for at least two countries in Africa pushing for a grand prix. “I am happy to formally announce that Rwanda is bidding to bring the thrill of racing back to Africa, by hosting a Formula 1 grand prix,” said Kagame.
“A big thank you to Stefano Domenicali and the entire team at F1 for the good progress in our discussions so far. I assure you we are approaching this opportunity with the seriousness and commitment it deserves.”
In the discussions about Africa, few weeks back, Lewis Hamilton gave his support for F1 to return in the continent in the future. “100%, we can’t be adding races in other locations and continue to ignore Africa, which the rest of the world just takes from,” he said. “No one gives anything to Africa.
“There’s a huge amount of work that needs to be done there. I think a lot of the world that haven’t been there don’t realise how beautiful the place is, how vast it is. I think having a grand prix there, it would really be able to highlight just how great the place is and bring in tourism and all sorts of things. Why are we not on that continent?”
