Lando Norris took the top spot in the final moments of FP1 in F1 Brazil GP from George Russell, with Oliver Bearman in third.
It was relatively smooth in the lone FP1 in F1 Brazil GP at Interlagos, where everyone did not crash but had snappy moments all-through the session. The list had Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, Haas’ Oliver Bearman, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and more.
It was bumpy as well, as the drivers complained on the new resurfaced circuit. For a longtime, Mercedes’ George Russell was leading until the final lap when McLaren’s Lando Norris set a 1m10.610s lap to end up fastest in FP1 of F1 Brazil GP.
Russell had to be content with second, with Bearman ending up third after getting a late call-up to replace a sick Kevin Magnussen for at least the Friday running, which includes Saturday’s sprint. He rounded out a British 1-2-3 finish.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was fourth from Williams’ Alexander Albon, as they led the Ferrari pair where Charles Leclerc beat teammate Carlos Sainz for sixth in a late attempt. Likewise, Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg ended up eighth after his late lap.
It dropped Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso to ninth, as Alpine’s Pierre Gasly rounded out the Top 10 from the Visa Cash App RB pair of Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda, where the two set their best time on the medium tyres and not the soft ones.
Williams’ Franco Colpainto was 13th from Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in 15th ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, where both had their best time on the medium compound. The Brit, though, complained of being in pain.
It was unclear if it was due to the bouncing. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll slotted in 17th from Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, as Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was 19th – on a changed chassis – and Kick Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu ended up 20th.
Verstappen, meanwhile, will take a 5-place grid penalty for the main race after his sixth ICE. Here: https://www.fia.com/sites/default/files/decision-document/2024%20S%C3%A3o%20Paulo%20Grand%20Prix%20-%20New%20PU%20elements%20for%20this%20Competition.pdf
