Carlos Sainz set the pace in a Ferrari 1-3 in FP1 of F1 Hungarian GP, with Charles Leclerc third behind Max Verstappen.

It was hot at Hungaroring for FP1 in F1 Hungarian GP which meant the drivers could only eke out one quick lap in their qualifying trim. The heat didn’t deter the Ferrari pair to end up 1-3 with Carlos Sainz (1m18.713s) on top and Charles Leclerc (1m19.011s) third.

Both of them had their moments too with the latter having multiple during the session. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen (1m18.989s) was sandwiched in between them driving an updated car with a revised sidepod. In fact, he did a fast lap on the second attempt.

Mercedes’ George Russell was fourth from Stake F1 Team’s Zhou Guanyu, who seemingly had his sidepod changed after parts on the left-side started to melt. The Chinese racer did not run the full upgrade package as opposed to teammate Valtteri Bottas.

Guanyu’s solid pace saw him finish ahead of the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, where the Brit also had a slippery moment, with the Australian having a delayed run. Visa Cash App RB’s Yuki Tsunoda was eighth from Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll.

The Canadian did not run the updated car as opposed to Fernando Alonso, and complained about the shock behaviour of the car early in the session but managed to claw back. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton rounded out the Top 10 from Red Bull’s Sergio Perez.

The Mexican did not have the full updates but still was a bit far off his teammate, as the other Visa Cash App RB of Daniel Ricciardo was 12th. Alonso slotted in 13th from the first Williams of Alexander Albon with teammate Logan Sargeant in 15th.

There was brief VSC to collect broken part off Albon’s car who lost it after running over a kerb. Bottas slotted in between in 14th, as the Top 20 was rounded out by the Alpine and Haas pair, where Pierre Gasly was ahead of Esteban Ocon and Kevin Magnussen ahead of Oliver Bearman, who got his FP1 chance in place of Nico Hulkenberg.

The Dane had brake issues throughout the session, which also saw some impeding complaints from drivers. In terms of the tyres, Leclerc set his best time on the hard compound with Russell, Norris, Piastri, Hamilton, Ricciardo, Gasly, Magnussen and Bearman all on the medium.
