Off-road rally veterans Carlos Sainz Sr and Nasser Al Attiyah are amid a social media battle with regards to course cutting in the rallies they entered.
Rivals Sainz Sr and Al Attiyah got into an ugly social media fight post the end of the 2021 Andalucia Rally, where the latter won, to kick-start this year’s FIA World Cross-Country Championship, driving the Toyota Hilux rally-raid machine.
Sainz Sr – in his Mini Cooper – ended up just 43s behind Al Attiyah, after the latter got a two-minute time penalty for cutting across the rally course in the final special. With him winning by 2m43s, the penalty eventually wasn’t enough to help the Spaniard.
Considering the loss by a mere 43s, Sainz Sr took to social media on Monday, to not just release a full statement on the matter, but also shared a video showing Al Attiyah cutting the course, which left the videographer baffled as well.
The response from Al Attiyah was rather strange, as he just laughed it off by asking Sainz Sr to not be disappointed with it. After few hours, the Qatari then shared an old video from Baja Spain, which had the Spaniard cutting through a course in his Peugeot.
While Al Attiyah mentioned it to be the 2017 event, it was from the 2016 rally, which he won still. Even the two have been teammates at Volkswagen, the relation between the Qatari and Sainz Sr has been up & down and this adds another dimension.
Here’s the full exchange with videos:
