Pirelli Motorsport has revealed the F1 2020 tyre choices for the eight grand prix with the races at Silverstone to have different sets of compounds.
Throwing away the earlier list of tyre choices, Pirelli revealed the new sets of compounds to be used by the teams for the upcoming eight rounds to start the 2020 F1 season. Among them, the two races in United Kingdom will feature different sets.
Starting with the original Austrian GP on July 3-5 weekend, Pirelli has selected C2 (hard, white), C3 (medium, yellow) and C4 (soft, red) for the F1 grand prix, which will be same for the Steiemark GP – to be held the same venue at Red Bull Ring.
The following Hungarian GP will have the same set of compounds as well, with the original British GP having C1 (hard), C2 (medium) and C3 (soft) and the 70th Anniversay GP at the same venue at Silverstone, having C2, C3 and C4 for teams to choose from.
The Spanish GP will see C1, C2 and C3 in use, while the Belgium GP and Italian GP will have C2, C3 and C4, respectively. The system will continue to be the same with each driver having 13 sets of compounds available to them for the whole weekend.
As known, the drivers will have to keep one softest compound for Q3, which will be returned for the Top 10 drivers but the remaining the can keep it for the race. Pirelli has made it compulsory for drivers to have one set of hard and one medium for the weekend.
The drivers will have to use at least one of the sets during the weekend as well. “With so many variables at the start of this delayed season, and a flexible calendar that doesn’t leave much time to react to changing circumstances, it was agreed with the teams, the promoter and the FIA to announce the compound nominations for the first eight races this year all together.
“As usual, these compounds have been chosen to best match the characteristics of the individual circuit and provide interesting opportunities for race strategy,” summed up Pirelli Motorsport F1 head, Mario Isola.
