Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian GP for the 5th time at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit. Sebastian Vettel finished 2nd for Ferrari, while Valtteri Bottas got his first podium of the season for Williams.

Vettel had an extraordinary start where he overtook both Mercedes. Hamilton left no room for Rosberg and forced him off-track, leaving him P10. Verstappen was 3rd ahead of Ricciardo, Räikkönen, Bottas, Massa, Alonso, Hülkenberg and Rosberg.

There was a Virtual Safety Car due to an engine failure on Button’s car at the back straight. Ferrari sent both his drivers to pit in order to take advantage of the VSC, which left Vettel on the lead with the supersofts ahead of Hamilton, Verstappen, Räikkönen, Ricciardo, Bottas, Rosberg, Pérez, Massa and Hülkenberg. This strategy forced Vettel and Räikkönen to go for a 2 stop strategy, with Kimi pitting again after 21 laps.

Ricciardo lost P4 with Bottas after missing the appex on turn 14, later on pitting again for another set of softs. Vettel pitted on lap 39 and came out 7 seconds behind Hamilton with softs. He wouldn’t be able to catch Hamilton, who celebrated his 5th victory in Montréal after taking good care of his tyres for the second race in a row. Valtteri Bottas completed the podium with a one-stop strategy. Rosberg climbed up to 5th after his first lap disaster. He was very close to overtaking Verstappen, but a mistake on the last chicane almost made him spun and he fell back to 5th. Räikkönen, Ricciardo, Hülkenberg, Sainz and Pérez completed the top 10.
