Luca Ghiotto claimed his maiden win in GP2 Series ahead of Raffaele Marciello and Pierre Gasly.


Mitch Evans started from pole position ahead of Luca Ghiotto and Raffaele Marciello. Evans struggled to get away and had to defend from Ghiotto, the Italian passed the New-Zealander. Daniel De Jong complained about having been tagged by behind and had to give up. On lap 2, Racing Engineering cars collided and Nato had to give up. The safety car went in to retrieve Nato’s car.

At the restart, Marciello and Evans battled which allowed Ghiotto to get away. Marciello eventually passed Evans in the restart lap. King got a ten seconds penalty after the incident with his teammate. Sirotkin seemed to have engine problems and was not able to continue in the race.

After a bad start, Gasly managed to get back to eighth position, just behind Giovinazzi. In his battle with King and Rowland, Giovinazzi went wide and came back behind Gasly. The Frenchman passed Rowland for P5 at the eighth lap. Giovinazzi did as well one lap later.

Halfway through the race, Malja joined Evans. King pitted to take his penalty and change of tyres and front wing. Evans thoroughly defended his podium position against Malja and allowed Gasly and Giovinazzi to come back. Both Prema managed to overtake Evans and Malja and Gasly set the provisional fastest time.

Ghiotto’s gap to Marciello was starting to fade but the Trident driver did not give in, neither did Giovinazzi who tried everything he could to pass his teammate in the two last laps but eventually remained fourth.

Luca Ghiotto took his maiden win in GP2 ahead of Raffaele Marciello and Pierre Gasly. Giovinazzi, Malja, Evans, Matsushita, Rowland, Cecotto and Latifi completed the top 10. Only 7 points stood between Giovinazzi and Gasly ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
