Giovinazzi has scored the fastest time on his last attempt to beat Gasly, who will start from second position. Behind them, Gustav Malja will start from third position.

The qualifying session began with a warm atmosphere: with an ambient temperature of 31ºC and 40°C of track temperature, and also with the return to GP2 of Sergio Canamasas, after not participating in last round, German Grand Prix, due to some differences with his team.

Almost all drivers have abandoned the Pit Lane as soon as the traffic light has turned green. After 10 minutes, Pierre Gasly had already awarded himself the head of the table with Giovinazzi and King behind. But Prema’s French driver has had several ‘battles’ to get the best time against the other candidate to win the championship: Sergey Sirotkin.

With 5 minutes left, Pierre Gasly continued with the best time, but Nato and Malja had been placed after the French. He led from the beginning, but in the last 3 minutes of the session, Gasly‘s battle for Pole was against his teammate, Antonio Giovinazzi.

Gasly made his last attempt beating the record of sector 2, but on the last part of circuit, he made a very little mistake that cost him the pole position, as Giovinazzi came from behind making a perfect lap, and the italian reached the finish line without committing any mistake.

Thus, Pole for the Italian Prema driver with his teammate completing the first row of the grid. Malja got the third fastest time and, behind him, we find Nato and King. The Top10 will be completed with Pic, Marciello, Lynn, Matsushita and Kirchhofer.
