Prema’s Mick Schumacher continued his fine run in the 2018 FIA European Formula 3 Championship with his fifth pole of the 2018 season at Red Bull Ring.
The German is coming off from a dominant Nurburgring weekend where he won all the three races to go with two poles to be only three points behind Red Bull junior and Motopark’s Dan Ticktum with two rounds to go.
Ahead of the weekend, he told FormulaRapida.net that he still learning and that he his not driving at his best yet. However, Schumacher continues to shine with his fifth pole for Race 1 at Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring circuit.
The German improved to a 1m23.640s with few minutes remaining in the session, which was enough as teammate Robert Shwartzman could only manage second with a 1m23.887s lap time on his final attempt.
This is Schumacher & Shwartzman fourth straight 1-2 in qualifying, taking the results from Nurburgring. It ended up with a Prema 1-2-3 with Marcus Armstrong (1m23.926s) in third with Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala (1m23.987s) leading the rest of the pack.
The Top 4 were the only drivers to lap in the 1m23s bracket. Meanwhile, points leader Ticktum was only sixth behind Motorpark’s teammate Juri Vips in another difficult run for the British driver where he couldn’t penetrate the top half.
Motopark’s Jonathan Aberdein lined up seventh from the lead HitechGP car of Enaam Ahmed with Motopark’s Fabio Scherer in ninth ahead of the Prema duo Ralf Aron and Guanyu Zhou. Several drivers’ laps were deleted due to track limits.
